Russian, Algerian FMs meet in New York

NEW YORK, UN. Jan 23 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has met with Algerian counterpart Ahmed Attaf in New York.

The meeting is being held in a format closed to the press. At the onset, the two foreign ministers warmly greeted each other, an Interfax correspondent reported.

Lavrov asked Attaf as to how long ago the latter had arrived in New York.

Attaf said he had arrived the previous morning. "[I travelled] 14 hours to get here from Doha. I attended the Non-Allied Movement Summit in Kampala, that was the only itinerary possible," he said.

A Security Council open debate on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, will be held at the United Nations headquarters on Tuesday.
