MOSCOW. Jan 29 (Interfax) - A court in Khimki, Moscow region, has sentenced a man who tried to smuggle 25 gold bars out of Russia to five years and one month in a penitentiary, the public relations center of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Monday.
"The Khimki District Court in the Moscow region found the defendant guilty of a crime defined by Part 2 Article 226.1 of the Russian Criminal Code (contraband) and sentenced him to five years and one month in a general penitentiary," the public relations center said.
According to the FSB, the man was detained at Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport.
"The person trying to leave the Russian Federation had precious metal, 25 bars of refined gold with a total weight of over 36 kilograms, stashed in his cabin luggage. The value of the seized contraband exceeds 111 million rubles," the FSB said.
The gold bars were impounded by the state, it said.
