Russia to set up firefighter, rescue training center in Syria

MOSCOW. Feb 6 (Interfax) - The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry will set up a center in Syria to train firefighters and rescue workers, the ministry's press service said on Tuesday.

"The location of the future center is being determined. Our country will supply Syria with domestically-manufactured hardware, equipment and gear. It's planned that this will be used during training and employed in practice to ensure safety. [...] Classrooms will also be equipped for training our foreign colleagues," Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov was quoted by the press service as saying.

The initiative "will raise the level of responses to emergencies," he said.

On February 6, the ministry hosted a meeting between Kurenkov and Syrian Ambassador to Russia Bashar Jaafari to discuss bilateral cooperation.

A Russian government directive to establish the center in Syria was signed in December last year.
