Russian appeal court sentences sociologist Kagarlitsky to 5 years in prison

VLASIKHA, Moscow region. Feb 13 (Interfax) - The Military Appeal Court has changed the penalty for sociologist Boris Kagarlitsky (designated as a foreign agent in Russia) from a fine to imprisonment, the court told Interfax.

"Kagarlitsky's penalty has been altered, Kagarlitsky is now sentenced to five years in a general penitentiary," the court said on Tuesday.

He is also prohibited from administering websites for two years.

Kagarlitsky was taken into custody in the courtroom.

The court thus partially upheld a prosecutor's appeal against Kagarlitsky's sentence.

As reported, the Second Western District Military Court imposed a 600,000-ruble fine on Kagarlitsky and prohibited him from administering websites for two years. The sociologist was released from custody in the courtroom.

The prosecutor disagreed with the sentence and filed an appeal, demanding five years and a half in a general penitentiary for Kagarlitsky. The prosecutor demanded the same sentence at the lower-tier court.

The sentence has taken effect and will be enforced.

Kagarlitsky was found guilty of excusing terrorism.

According to investigators, Kagarlitsky, Rabkor project editor-in-chief, posted a video that publicly excused terrorism.

Kagarlitsky pleaded not guilty during the investigation and the trial. At the same time, neither he nor his defense appealed the sentence. The fine was paid by the time of the appeal hearing.

Kagarlitsky, a known sociologist and political analyst, was designated as a foreign agent in May 2022. The Institute of Globalization Studies and Social Movements he founded was also designated as a foreign agent.
