Azerbaijani, Russian diplomats discuss peace prospects between Baku, Yerevan

BAKU. Feb 14 (Interfax) - Acting Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Russian Foreign Ministry Special Representative for the Normalization of Azerbaijani-Armenian Relations Igor Khovayev have discussed the prospects for peace between Baku and Yerevan and the situation in the region.

"During the meeting, the parties discussed the state of and prospects for a peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the situation and the latest events in the region, and regional issues," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

The Russian diplomat was made aware that "Armenia's recent military provocations, which resulted in an Azerbaijani soldier being wounded, aim to undermine stability and the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which have been established in the past few months," it said.

Bayramov and Khovayev also exchanged opinions on other matters of mutual interest, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.

The Azerbaijani State Border Service carried out Operation Retaliation on the border with Armenia on Tuesday in response to shooting from the Armenian side on February 12, which wounded an Azerbaijani border guard. The operation resulted in an Armenian combat outpost near the village of Nerkin Hand in the Gafan district, where the shooting came from, being suppressed and destroyed.

The Armenian Defense Ministry acknowledged that four Armenian soldiers were killed and another was injured in the operation conducted by Azerbaijani border guards.
