NEW YORK, UN. Feb 16 (Interfax) - The United Nations has called reports alleging Russia's plans to deploy nuclear weapons in space unlikely.
"This is media speculation. We don't have any substantive information on it," Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, said on Thursday in response to the request for comment.
"As a matter of principle the secretary general continues to call on all member states to avoid an arms race in outer space," Dujarric said.
The United Nations urges nuclear powers to comply with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and "avoid any action that could lead to catastrophic miscalculation or escalation," he said.
The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence informed the U.S. Congress about "a serious national security threat" on Thursday, Committee Chairman Mike Turner said.
ABC News said later, citing its sources, that the United States had learned about Russia's alleged intention to deploy nuclear weapons in space.
