Aliyev calls meeting with Pashinyan in Munich constructive, useful

BAKU. Feb 19 (Interfax) - Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met with Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Secretary-General, Munich Security Conference Foundation Council Deputy President Helga Schmid on the Munich Security Conference sidelines on Sunday, the Azerbaijani presidential website said.

The meeting addressed Azerbaijani-OSCE cooperation in climate change matters. The sides also exchanged views on regional affairs.

"Aliyev noted that a meeting [with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan] initiated by German Federal Chancellor [Olaf Scholz] was constructive and useful. Agreements were reached with regard to normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, border delimitation, and negotiations on a peace agreement," the website said.

Aliyev announced the agreement to hold a meeting of the [Azerbaijani and Armenian] foreign ministers in the near future.

Aliyev called the achievement of peace and the conclusion of a peace agreement realistic and said there was a de-facto peace in the region. He said it was time to abolish certain OSCE mechanisms, such as the Minsk Group and the High-Level Planning Group, as remnants of the past.

"Given the OSCE budget problems, the head of state underlined the importance of channeling the available limited funds towards more significant goals," the website said.
