Russian nuclear subs practice underwater duel during drill in Barents Sea - Northern Fleet

MOSCOW. Feb 19 (Interfax) - Multirole nuclear submarines have practiced anti-submarine tasks during an exercise in the Barents Sea, Russia's Northern Fleet said in as statement on Monday.

"The Northern Fleet's nuclear submarines conducted an underwater duel," it said.

"The submarines trained for several days to search for and secretly track their partners acting as a mock enemy, perform combat maneuvers with assuming a position to attack, and elude pursuit using jamming countermeasures and decoys," it said.

"The underwater maneuvers were performed at depths of more than 100 meters without actually using naval weapons," it said.

The submarines interacted with Ilyushin Il-38 anti-submarine aircraft from a combined air corps at certain stages of the drills, it said.

The exercise was planned in advance, it said.
