Chechen court sentences Volgograd resident to 3.5 years in prison for burning Koran

GROZNY. Feb 27 (Interfax) - The Visaitovsky District Court in Grozny, Chechnya, has sentenced Nikita Zhuravel over burning the Koran near a mosque in Volgograd, the court press service told Interfax on Tuesday.

"Zhuravel was found guilty and sentenced to three and a half years in a general penitentiary," the press service said.

A prosecutor demanded that Zhuravel be found guilty of burning the Koran near a mosque in Volgograd and sentenced to three and a half years in a penitentiary.

Zhuravel was detained in Volgograd in May 2023. He was placed under arrest and handed over to Chechen investigators. He was charged with insulting feelings of believers and committing an act of hooliganism.
