Azerbaijan, Iran discuss steps to reopen Azerbaijani embassy in Iran

BAKU. March 5 (Interfax) - Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian have discussed bilateral cooperation and the situation in the region at a meeting in Saudi Arabia, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.

"The parties discussed bilateral and regional issues as well as the current situation in the region at the meeting. The two ministers also exchanged views on steps to resume the operations of the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran after the court handed down a sentence against the perpetrator of the terrorist attack on the Azerbaijani embassy," the ministry said.

The parties discussed plans to expand contacts at the highest level, stressed the importance of the work of the intergovernmental commission, and discussed plans for developing and expanding transport and communication corridors in the region.

Bayramov also informed his Iranian counterpart about the current situation in the region, as well as the situation and the prospects for the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

It was emphasized at the meeting that the involvement of third parties by Armenia does not promote peace and stability in the region, and attempts made by a number of countries to arm Armenia pose a threat to the peace process, the ministry said.

Other bilateral and regional issues on the current agenda of cooperation between the two countries were also discussed at the meeting.

The meeting took place during an extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
