U.S. to provide Ukraine with $300 mln military aid package - White House

WASHINGTON. March 12 (Interfax) - The United States will deliver a new $300 million military aid package to Kiev, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Tuesday.

"So today, on behalf of President Biden I'm announcing an emergency package of security assistance of $300 million worth of weapons and equipment," he said at a press briefing.

"This emergency package we're announcing contains a large tranche of artillery rounds and GMLRS for HIMARS," Sullivan said.

This is the first tranche of aid from the U.S. to Ukraine this year. The previous security assistance package was announced on December 27, 2023.

Politico earlier reported, citing unnamed U.S. officials, that the White House intended to announce a new $300 million military aid package for Kiev, which would include ATACMS ballistic missiles.

"The package will include [...] an older version of the long-range ATACMS, which travels 100 miles and carries warheads containing hundreds of cluster bomblets," the publication said.

The tranche should also include 155mm howitzer shells, GMLRS used in M270 multiple rocket launchers and M142 HIMARS multiple rocket launchers.

The Pentagon is using previously saved resources for this aid package, but it is a temporary solution, a Politico source said. "This is not an alternative path for a supplemental," an unnamed U.S. Defense Department official said.

The U.S. administration filed a request with Congress last fall for supplemental funding to provide further assistance to Ukraine and Israel, in particular, Kiev was offered $61.4 billion for one year. However, this funding has yet to be approved.

It was reported in October 2023 that Washington had covertly supplied Kiev with long-range ATACMS missiles. Politico noted at the time that the U.S. had first provided Ukraine with hardware capable of hitting targets "far behind the front lines."
