Armenia expects updated partnership priorities from EU - parliamentary speaker

YEREVAN. March 21 (Interfax) - Yerevan expects updated partnership priorities from the European Union and thanks the EU for its willingness to deepen partnership, Armenian parliamentary Chairman Alen Simonyan said.

"Despite security problems that Armenia has faced in recent months, we remain firmly determined to build a society that fully reflects our values and which we share with the EU. We applaud the EU's commitment to deeper partnership with us and are looking forward to updated partnership priorities that reflect our common approaches," Simonyan said at a plenary session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly in Brussels.

Simonyan referred to "Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's historic statement in October 2023 on Armenia's intention to have closer ties with the EU."

"In this context, we are considering the Eastern Partnership, which would stimulate closer cooperation with a broad-ranging agenda as a solid foundation for relations between Armenia and the EU. Armenia has chosen a path of democracy and reforms and is determined to continue this path with the EU's assistance," Simonyan said.

Yerevan is looking forward to negotiations on easing visa arrangements between Armenia and the EU, he said.

"Regional security and the strengthening and diversification of Armenia's defense capability remain our priorities. In this context, we attach significance to providing support to Armenia by way of the European Peace Facility. At the same time, we seek assistance from all the EU members," Simonyan said.
