MOSCOW. March 26 (Interfax) - Claims for the seizure of property worth 400 billion rubles illegally acquired by corrupt officials were upheld by Russian courts in 2023, the bulk of the sum has already been collected to the state budget, Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov said.
"Some 4,000 properties, cars and other expensive possessions acquired with unconfirmed proceeds were seized from corrupt officials during the year. In total, courts satisfied over 400 billion rubles in claims by prosecutors in anti-corruption lawsuits. A majority of them have been recovered and paid to the budget," Krasnov said at a Prosecutor General's Office board meeting on results on Tuesday.
Almost 50,000 officials were disciplined for violating anti-corruption bans and more than 560 fired due to loss of trust, he said.
"There is a clear prophylactic element to this work," Krasnov said. "When there is an obvious possibility of being deprived of assets and disenfranchised, law-abiding behavior becomes a priority, especially in light of measures being taken to raise the prestige of public and municipal service," Krasnov said.
He demanded "a tough response to every case of failure by an official to comply with restrictions envisaged by law, [and] to ensure the imminence of accountability for corrupt behavior regardless of position and rank."
