TBILISI. April 2 (Interfax) - The Georgian Prosecutor's Office has appealed to the Netherlands seeking the detention and extradition of wanted former Justice Minister Zurab Adeishvili, who is currently residing in The Hague.
"The Georgian Prosecutor's Office is taking all measures stipulated by the law within its powers to bring individuals who committed crimes in Georgia to Georgian justice regardless of their location. In this case, also based on publicly circulating information, the prosecutor's office appealed to the competent authorities of the Netherlands with a request to detain Zurab Adeishvili and extradite him to Georgia," the press service for the prosecutor's office said.
Adeishvili was convicted in absentia by a Georgian court for organizing the torture of prisoners and business racketeering, the press service said. Adeishvili currently holds the post of an advisor to the prosecutor general of Ukraine.
Earlier in March, Adeishvili visited Germany and the European Union as part of a delegation of the Ukrainian Prosecutor's Office. The Georgian authorities voiced a protest against this, which Berlin and Brussels did not respond to.
