Russian Investigative Committee's central staff to investigate attack on Murmansk region governor

MOSCOW. April 5 (Interfax) - The Russian Investigative Committee has announced that its central staff will investigate the attack on governor of the Murmansk region Andrei Chibis.

"The Russian Investigative Committee chairman has ordered the criminal case to be reassigned to its main investigative department for further investigation," the committee said on Telegram on Friday.

"Detectives, forensic technicians and experts of the Russian Investigative Committee's central staff have been posted to the region" on the orders of Committee Chairman Alexander Bastrykin, it said.

"The investigators will scrutinize every detail of the crime and make an impartial legal assessment of the incident," the committee said.

Chibis was attacked by a local resident with a knife while leaving the Stroitel cultural center in Apatity on Thursday evening after a meeting with the population. The assailant was quickly detained after the arresting officer of the Russian National Guard fired his service weapon.

The injured governor was hospitalized and underwent surgery.

A criminal case was opened on counts of the attempted murder of an official.

The Russian Investigative Committee said that the detainee told the interrogating officers he "had committed the assault due to his dislike of the governor, though he was not personally acquainted with him".

The detainee has a previous conviction for causing minor bodily harm, the Russian Investigative Committee said.
