Drone strike on Zaporozhye NPP 6th unit does not compromise nuclear safety - IAEA

BRUSSELS. April 8 (Interfax) - The damage done to the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant by a drone strike has not compromised its nuclear safety, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Sunday.

"Damage at unit 6 has not compromised nuclear safety," the IAEA said on a social network.

It said, however, "This is a serious incident with potential to undermine integrity of the reactor's containment system."

"This is a clear violation of the basic principles for protecting Europe's largest NPP. Such reckless attacks significantly increase the risk of a major nuclear accident and must cease immediately," the statement quoted IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi as saying.

The communications department of the Russian Rosatom state corporation said on Sunday that the Zaporozhye NPP had experienced an unprecedented series of drone strikes jeopardizing its safety.

Rosatom called on the IAEA and the leadership of the European Union countries to immediately respond to the attempted escalation of the situation around the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.

Ukrainian forces attacked the power plant on April 5. The drones hit the area of a cargo port and a nitrogen-oxygen station.
