Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, EU send power generators to Ukraine - European Commission

BRUSSELS. April 9 (Interfax) - In response to Ukraine's request for assistance, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden have mobilized 157 power generators of various sizes via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, the European Commission said on Tuesday.

"To further strengthen Ukrainian energy infrastructure, the EU has also deployed 10 large capacity power generators (1MW) from its own strategic stockpiles, with a financial value of 3.57 million euros," the commission said.

Each of these generators is capable of supplying electricity to a medium-sized hospital under emergency conditions, it said.

"We are mobilizing a new batch of generators to Ukraine from our reserves, which have already proved to be a critical tool in responding to urgent needs. This underscores the importance of preparedness in efficient crisis response," the statement quoted European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic as saying.

The generators are already on their way to Ukraine, it said.

"The EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre is in close contact with the Ukrainian authorities on the ground to provide further aid as necessary," it said.
