Russian Pacific Fleet ships practice destroying enemy sub near Kamchatka

VLADIVOSTOK. April 16 (Interfax) - The Ust-Ilimsk and the MPK-107 small anti-submarine ships of the Russian Pacific Fleet have conducted an exercise near the Kamchatka Peninsula, the fleet's press service said in a statement on Tuesday.

"During the first phase of the exercise, the ship practiced searching for a mock enemy submarine together with the fleet's naval aircraft," it said.

An Ilyushin Il-38N anti-submarine aircraft deployed sonobuoys in the area that simulated enemy submarines were expected to pass through, after which ship practiced moves to force an enemy submarine that violated Russia's marine borders to surface, it said.

The mock enemy submarine attempted to deploy a self-propelled simulator to split the target on radar screens and acoustic control devices. However, the ships' combat units managed to establish a steady contact.

The role of enemy submarine during the drills was assigned to a Pacific Fleet nuclear submarine.
