Georgian president accuses govt of attacking constitution to change national political course

TBILISI. May 6 (Interfax) - The Georgian government has attacked the constitution, which declares a pro-European course, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili said.

"A provocation and an attack on the constitution, which clearly defines the Georgian foreign political course, have occurred," Zourabichvili told foreign ambassadors on Saturday.

The "provocative" statements on changing Georgia's political course were made at a pro-governmental rally in Tbilisi, she said.

Zourabichvili asked the ambassadors to promote high-level visits to Georgia in May, before the final approval of the bill on Transparency of Foreign Influence, which triggered the crisis.

The crisis in Georgia has been ongoing for over 20 days. Protests against the bill have been held on a daily basis in Tbilisi. The protesters say they will not allow changing the pro-European course.

Meanwhile, the authorities claim the protest is being sponsored by foreign foundations to bring the opposition to power.
