Xi will support Ukraine peace conference if both Moscow and Kiev favor it

PARIS. May 6 (Interfax) - Beijing will support the idea of an international conference on Ukrainian peace, provided both Kiev and Moscow have done so as well, Chinese President Xi Jinping said.

"We are for holding, whenever possible, an international peace conference supported both by Ukraine and Russia," Xi told the press after talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday. The event was broadcast by the Elysee Palace.

All sides at such a conference should be on equal terms, he said. It "should give a fair consideration to all peace options," Xi said.

In future, to find ways of resolving the Ukrainian conflict "all sides concerned should restart contact and dialogue to regain mutual trust," he said.

The Chinese leader also backed the idea of suspending armed conflicts globally for the duration of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
