Foreign-agent bill contravenes Georgian people's aspirations - U.S. Dept of State

WASHINGTON. May 14 (Interfax) - The Georgian leadership's effort towards the adoption of the bill on Transparency of Foreign Influence contravenes aspirations of the people of Georgia, U.S. Department of State spokesman Vedant Patel said on Monday.

"The kind of actions that we're seeing, they are inconsistent with the self-stated aspirations of the Georgian people, not something that other countries or the United States are saying, but the self-stated aspirations of the people of Georgia," Patel said at a press briefing, while commenting on the bill situation.

He noted that 80% of Georgians want their country to enter into the European Union, and Washington supports their goal and urges Georgia to return to "a path of EU integration."

The Georgian Parliament Committee on Legal Affairs approved the foreign-agent bill without opposition on Monday morning.

The bill on Transparency of Foreign Influence is expected to be adopted in Georgia on May 14.
