Aliyev proposes doing away with OSCE Minsk Group

BAKU. May 14 (Interfax) - Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has received a delegation led by the OSCE Chair-in-Office and Maltese Minister of Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg in Baku, proposing at the meeting that the OSCE Minsk Group be dissolved.

Speaking at the meeting, Aliyev said it was Azerbaijan that initiated a peace process with Armenia and proposed fundamental principles of this process and the text of a future peace agreement, a statement available on the Azerbaijani presidential website says.

The negotiating process under the aegis of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs effectively prolonged the occupation of Azerbaijani territories, and Azerbaijan ensured its territorial integrity and sovereignty in line with international law and the United Nations Charter, Aliyev said at the meeting.

"The president added that the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict has become history, and therefore, it is time to dissolve the OSCE Minsk Group and the relevant institutions. Azerbaijan has raised the issue, and there are no reasons for Armenia to disagree," it said.

Borg said Malta supported a normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia and negotiations on a peace treaty, it said.

The meeting participants exchanged views on transport links within the OSCE framework, cooperation in the organization of the 29th UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Baku in November 2024 (COP29), and bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Malta.
