Crimean resident sentenced in absentia to 18 years in high-security penitentiary on treason counts

ROSTOV-ON-DON. May 17 (Interfax) - The Crimean Supreme Court has convicted a local resident of treason in absentia, the regional prosecution service said.

The defendant was sentenced to 18 years in a high-security penitentiary, it said.

The court found that the defendant joined a separate motorized infantry brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in February 2022, having received military training, a uniform and weapons.

"He has been taking part in the hostilities against the Russian Armed Forces since then," the prosecution service said on Telegram.

The man is on the international wanted list, it said.

The court ordered a 21-month restriction of freedom for the convict after his sentence is served.

The sentence has yet to take effect.
