BAKU. May 21 (Interfax) - Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev visited the Iranian embassy in Baku on Tuesday to extend condolences over the tragic death of Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and accompanying officials in a helicopter crash.
Aliyev met with Iranian Charge d'Affaires ad interim in Azerbaijan Seyyed Jafar Aghaei, the Azerbaijani presidential website said.
"Raisi was an outstanding statesman, a prominent politician and a remarkable person who gained the trust of the Iranian people," Aliyev said.
"Our latest meeting [on May 19, 2024] was historic. Both he and I called it historic. Our joint attendance of the opening ceremony for a large infrastructure facility at the border proved the strength of Iranian-Azerbaijani relations," he said.
"The bilateral meeting [with Raisi], which lasted for over an hour, addressed numerous important issues. We reaffirmed prospective areas for the development of Iranian-Azerbaijani relations and once again demonstrated the strong political will of both sides. We also had a broad exchange of views on specific infrastructure projects and made important decisions. I have no doubt that the people present at the meeting will convey that to the new Iranian leadership," Aliyev said.
"I am confident that every agreement reached will be implemented, as they rest upon the will of the Iranian and Azerbaijani peoples. The late President Raisi and I expressed our determination to implement numerous projects in the bilateral and multilateral formats," he said.
