MOSCOW. May 24 (Interfax) - The Second Western District Military Court has upheld the arrest of Maj. Gen. Ivan Popov, former commander of Russia's 58th Army, who is implicated in a fraud case, the court told Interfax.
"The decision of the 235th Garrison Military Court of May 17, 2024 to take Popov into custody is upheld, the defense lawyers' appeal is declined," the court said on Friday.
The defense lawyers asked the appellate court to reverse the first-instance court's decision as illegal and unfounded.
The Russian Investigative Committee earlier said the investigators had filed a motion for Popov to be placed under house arrest, taking into account the information characterizing him and other circumstances established during the investigation. The corresponding materials were expected to be considered by the 235th Garrison Military Court on May 24, but the trial was rescheduled to Monday, May 27 due to the consideration of the appeal in the general's arrest case.
