ROME. May 28 (Interfax) - The authorities in Italy have disagreed with the head of the European Union diplomacy who suggested that the EU countries could legitimately lift the ban on weapons sent to Kiev being used against Russia's territory, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Tuesday.
"We do not share [Josep] Borrell's position," Tajani was quoted by the Il Sole 24 Ore newspaper as saying.
"We are for de-escalation in the Middle East and in Ukraine. And our position is completely clear: we will not send Italian troops [to Ukraine] to take part in hostilities. And we will not give permission for the weapons sent by Italy to be used for strikes outside the Ukrainian conflict zone," Tajani said.
Such principles are enshrined in Rome's agreements in Kiev, he said. "We are monitoring how our weapons are being used," Tajani said.
Some EU countries will be ready to drop objections to using weapons they have sent for striking Russia's territory, Borrell said earlier on Tuesday. Such strikes may not be a breach of international norms, he also said.
