Police enhance security of Armenian govt building

YEREVAN. May 30 (Interfax) - Reinforced police patrols have cordoned off the Armenian government building in the center of Yerevan, and vehicles are being evacuated ahead of an opposition protest.

A number of opposition supporters have been detained, an Interfax correspondent reported.

The Armenian government will meet on Thursday. Government members had to pass through several police cordons to enter the building.

On Wednesday evening, Armenian Apostolic Church Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan urged his followers to drive their cars to Republic Square in front of the government building and block every entrance.

On May 4, Galstanyan, blessed by Catholicos Karekin II of all Armenians, announced a protest against the Armenian government policy in the border delimitation with Azerbaijan to take place in Yerevan on May 9. He also demanded Pashinyan's resignation. The protests demanding Pashinyan's resignation have been daily in Armenia since then.

Pashinyan did not rule out that Armenian clerics opposed to the government policy in the border delimitation with Azerbaijan were agents of influence.

An opposition rally held in the Yerevan center on May 26 proposed Galstanyan for prime minister. The archbishop said he asked Karekin II to suspend his clerical service.
