CHISINAU. May 30 (Interfax) - The Moldovan parliament on Thursday ratified the agreement on defense cooperation with France signed in Paris on March 7, 2024.
The document was supported by 54 of the 101 deputies of the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS). The opposition voted against it or abstained.
The document will replace a 1998 agreement. It envisages cooperation in areas such as defense policy and planning, armed forces reform, air space control and management, military medicine, etc. Cooperation will take place in the following forms: official visits and working meetings experience exchange, consultations, joint trainings and drills.
The agreement was signed for an indefinite period of time.
The Moldovan Defense Ministry press service earlier said Moldovan Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatii and French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu had signed a cooperation agreement. The ministry said that, "bearing in mind the development of the situation in the region and the challenges associated with it, the updating of the document is necessary to strengthen joint efforts to fight national security threats on the path of Moldova's accession to the European Union."
Among other things, the document envisages the creation of a Moldovan-French commission that will evaluate joint measures and will draft and approve a plan of defense cooperation. The commission will meet annually.
