ALMATY. May 31 (Interfax) - The Tajik-Afghan border needs to be reinforced alongside other measures towards regional stabilization because of the situation in Afghanistan, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov said.
"The situation in Afghanistan remains the main source of instability in the Central Asian region. Numerous radical groups have gained footing in its territory and intensified the promotion of their ideas in the neighboring republics. There is a growing possibility of gangs and terrorism spilling outside the country," Belousov said at a meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Council of Defense Ministers in Almaty on Friday.
All of that requires "constant control and timely measures to stabilize the regional situation," he said.
"This includes the strengthening of the Tajik-Afghan border," Belousov said.
