Case against French mercenary who took part in combat action on Ukrainian side submitted to court - Russian Prosecutor General's Office

MOSCOW. June 3 (Interfax) - The Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic will try the case against French national Hugo Julian Cuesta, who is charged in absentia with mercenary activity, spokesman for the Russian Prosecutor General's Office Andrei Ivanov told reporters on Monday.

"The Office of the Prosecutor of the Donetsk People's Republic has endorsed the act of indictment in the criminal case against 32-year-old French citizen Hugo Julian Cuesta. The criminal case has been sent to the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic for consideration of its merits," Ivanov said.

The French citizen is charged in absentia with participating in the armed conflict as a mercenary.

"According to investigators, Hugo Julian Cuesta took part in hostilities on the side of Ukraine in various points of armed contact as a mercenary in July 2022 - February 2024 and served in the ranks of the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade as a mechanic-driver of a reconnaissance squad [and] as a soldier (recruit). The amount of the reward received by the defendant is equivalent to 900,000 rubles," Ivanov said.

Hugo Julian has been placed on the international wanted list. The court has selected custody as a restrictive measure for him in absentia, he said.
