Russian Northern Fleet ships, nuclear subs begin anti-sub exercise in Barents Sea

MOSCOW. June 4 (Interfax) - Two nuclear submarines and the Admiral Levchenko and Vice-Admiral Kulakov destroyers have begun an anti-submarine exercise in the Barents Sea, the Russian Northern Fleet's press service said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Northern Fleet forces began a scheduled anti-submarine exercise in the Barents Sea today as part of the summer training plan," the statement said.

"The Admiral Levchenko and Vice-Admiral Kulakov destroyers deployed from the Northern Fleet's main base in Severomorsk to the designated area as members of a strike group," it said.

The exercise also involves two nuclear submarines, the press service said. "One of them, a multirole submarine, will operate together with the strike group, while the other will impersonate the mock enemy," it said.

"As part of the exercise, the strike group will practice elements of anti-submarine warfare, including the search for and pursuit of a submarine, together with the submarine and anti-submarine aviation, such as shipborne Kamov Ka-27 antisubmarine helicopters and Ilyushin Il-38 anti-submarine planes," it said.

At the final stage of the exercise, the destroyers will practice using anti-submarine weapons, it said.
