Two Russian diesel subs hold drills in Baltic Sea

MOSCOW. June 7 (Interfax) - The Kronshtadt and Mozhaisk diesel electric submarines have conducted an exercise in stealthy movement and pursuit in the Baltic Sea, the Baltic Fleet's press service said in a statement on Friday.

"As part of the bilateral exercise one of the submarines is escaping the pursuit, while the other is in pursuit for as long as possible," the statement said.

"Both submarines must sail as stealthy as possible while under water. The movement of sailors inside the submarines is restricted to exclude unnecessary noises. Sonar operators are carefully listening to the sea and searching for the enemy submarine," it said.

As the 'hostile' submarine is discovered, each combat shift has an opportunity to operate their submarine to retain pursuing positions while remaining unnoticed, it said.

This is a scheduled exercise, it said.
