Protesters demanding Pashinyan's resignation block Yerevan central avenue, set up tents near parliament

YEREVAN. June 10 (Interfax) - Protesters demanding resignation of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan have blocked Baghramyan Avenue in the center of Yerevan by setting up their tents in front of the parliament building.

Police has closed off Demirchyan Street adjacent to the parliament at the intersection with Baghramyan Avenue on both sides, an Interfax correspondent reported. The street has a service entrance to the parliament and connects Baghramyan Avenue with government buildings where Pashinyan lives.

Earlier, leader of Armenia's protest movement and Archbishop of the Armenian Apostolic Church Bagrat Galstanyan demanded that the parliament convene an extraordinary plenary session to consider the resignation of the incumbent government led by Pashinyan.

Starting on Monday, Armenian citizens should hold continuous rallies in order to "increase pressure on the ruling party," Galstanyan said.

On May 4, Galstanyan announced a procession and protests at the blessing of Catholicos Karekin II of All Armenians against the government's policy of border delimitation with Azerbaijan. Galstanyan also demanded Pashinyan's resignation.

On May 26, an opposition rally in the Yerevan center proposed Galstanyan for prime minister. The archbishop said he had asked the catholicos to suspend his service.
