Russian Northern Fleet destroyers hold firing drills in Barents Sea

MOSCOW. June 10 (Interfax) - A formation of anti-submarine ships of the Russian Northern Fleet's Kola Combined-Arms Flotilla has held artillery and air defense drills in the Barents Sea as part of a tactical exercise.

"Ships of the formation operated within a hunter-killer group to practice strikes on the mock enemy's ships, air defense, and artillery fire on coastal targets. The group included the Vice-Admiral Kulakov and Admiral Levchenko destroyers," the fleet press service said on Sunday.

The Brest anti-submarine corvette acted as the mock enemy, it said.

"The anti-submarine ships fired air defense systems to repel an airstrike. Kinzhal air defense missile systems hit a simulated target, an illuminated air bomb dropped by an Ilyushin Il-38 aircraft," the press service said.

The destroyers practiced interaction with shipborne Kamov Ka-27 helicopters, while missile and artillery systems were fired at "visible and covered targets on the coast of the Rybachi Peninsula simulating firing positions and command posts of the enemy," it said.
