MOSCOW. June 11 (Interfax) - The Zelenodolsk Shipyard of the Ak-Bars shipbuilding corporation in Russia's internal republic of Tatarstan launched the Stavropol corvette of Project 21631 Buyan-M on Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Russian Navy Commander Adm. Alexander Moiseyev, who arrived in Tatarstan on Monday, chaired the ceremony, the ministry said.
Once construction and trials are concluded, the ship will join the Russian Baltic Fleet.
Moiseyev thanked the shipyard's personnel for their work and said he was confident they would continue building ships for the Navy, demonstrating high skills and professionalism.
Navy Deputy Commander for Armaments Vice Adm. Igor Mukhametshin and Baltic Fleet Commander Vice Adm. Vladimir Vorobyov attended the launch ceremony.
The shipyard launched a corvette and a patrol ship for the Russian Black Sea Fleet a month ago, the ministry said.
As reported, Project 21631 corvettes, like Project 22800 corvettes, are armed with Kalibr precision-guided cruise missiles designed by Almaz-Antei's Novator Bureau.
The Black Sea Fleet, the Baltic Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla operate Buyan-M corvettes.
