Seventy-nine hurt, 98 detained as protesters clash with police in Yerevan - Interior Ministry

YEREVAN. June 13 (Interfax) - Ninety-eight protesters have been detained, and 79 people have been injured in Yerevan during a protest near the parliament building demanding the resignation of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

"Ninety-eight people have been detained," the Armenian Interior Ministry told Interfax.

In turn, the Armenian Health Ministry told Interfax that 79 people, including police officers, have asked for medical attendance, and six of them have been discharged.

The police used stun grenades against the protesters who gathered near the parliament building when Pashinyan was taking part in the Government Hour.

The police were "fulfilling their obligations as provided by law," Pashinyan told the parliament.

Protest leader, Armenian Apostolic Church Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan said at the rally near the parliament their "task is very simple - Pashinyan must resign." "We will not bate an inch," he said.

Protesters demanding Pashinyan's resignation blocked Baghramyan Avenue in the center of Yerevan by setting up tents in front of the parliament building in the early hours of June 10.

On May 4, Archbishop Galstanyan, blessed by Catholicos of all Armenians Karekin II, announced a protest in Yerevan against the Armenian government policy in the border delimitation with Azerbaijan and demanded Pashinyan's resignation.

On May 26 an opposition rally in central Yerevan nominated Galstanyan for prime minister. The archbishop said he had asked the Cathoilcos to freeze his church service.
