Stoltenberg says NATO ought to pledge to spend no less than 40 billion euro annually on assistance to Ukraine

BRUSSELS. June 13 (Interfax) - NATO countries should commit to spend at least 40 billion euro on aggregate on military assistance to Ukraine each year, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday.

"Allies have provided around 40 billion euros worth of military support each year. I have proposed that we sustain this level of support as a minimum, for as long as it takes," Stoltenberg said at a press conference in Brussels.

In his view, the amount of such assistance to be provided by every particular country should be determined based on the country's GDP figure. So, it is planned that about a half of this total amount will come from the United States since its GDP is much higher than that of other NATO allies, he said.

Stoltenberg said earlier in June that NATO countries should try to maintain the levels of military assistance being provided to Ukraine.
