Russia upgrading submarines, transitioning to their 4th generation - Navy commander

ST. PETERSBURG. June 19 (Interfax) - Russia is doing groundwork for submarines of the fifth-generation, including strategic and multi-purpose nuclear-powered submarines, Russian Navy Commander Alexander Moiseyev said.

"We are transiting from the third generation to the fourth. This is no secret," Moiseyev told journalists at the Fleet 2024 naval show in St. Petersburg on Wednesday.

Scientific groundwork for further development is prepared, he said.

"No doubt, this is underway, we always think about the future. And the military-scientific groundwork for the fifth generation is being made right now. This concerns both strategic and multipurpose nuclear-powered submarines," he said.

"The lifecycle of a ship and a nuclear-powered submarine is 25-30 years. Speaking about the future, we understand that new systems will be introduced after the [potential of] submarines in operation are used," Moiseyev said.
