Accession to EU Moldova's sovereign issue, Moscow closely watching situation - Peskov

MOSCOW. June 21 (Interfax) - Moldova's accession to the European Union is the country's internal matter, but Moscow is closely watching the developments, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

"This process is not fast. This is the sovereign matter of every state, including Moldova," Peskov told journalists, when asked how the Kremlin estimates Moldova's prospects to join the EU.

"A very large number of people in this country believe that it should develop in all directions, that the country's interests cannot be tied only to the European Union, but also [should be linked] to promising markets such as Russia and the integration space of the former Soviet Union," he said.

"This area is a priori being excluded from the agenda by the current Moldovan leadership for certain reasons. We also see that a large part of Moldova's population does not like this tendency," Peskov said.

"This is an internal Moldovan issue. We are watching it closely," he said.
