Death toll from Sunday's Dagestan terrorist attacks rises to 20 (Part 2)

MAKHACHKALA. June 24 (Interfax) - The death toll from Sunday's terrorist attacks in Makhachkala and Derbent in Russia's internal republic of Dagestan has risen to 20, and the number of those injured has reached 46, the Dagestani Health Ministry said on Monday.

"The acts of terrorism committed in Makhachkala and Derbent yesterday left 46 people injured, among them both civilians and law enforcement officials. Unfortunately, 20 people have died, among them also both law enforcement officials and civilians," the ministry said with reference to Dagestani Health Minister Tatyana Belyayeva.

Seven injured people are in serious condition and receiving all necessary medical aid, she said.

As reported earlier, 15 law enforcement officials and four civilians were killed on Sunday when armed gunmen attacked a synagogue and a church in Derbent and a church and a traffic police outpost in Makhachkala.

Six militants were reported killed.

Investigators have opened criminal cases on counts of committing an act of terrorism, the illegal acquisition, storage, or transportation or firearms, and theft of firearms.

Dagestan has declared days of mourning from June 24 to 26.
