Azerbaijani Constitutional Court to consider Aliyev's application on constitutionality of parliament dissolution request on Jun 27

BAKU. June 24 (Interfax) - The Plenum of the Azerbaijani Constitutional Court will convene on June 27 to consider an inquiry from President Ilham Aliyev on whether the request from Milli Majilis (Azerbaijan's parliament) for the parliament to be dissolved and new elections ordered has been in compliance with the Constitution.

The decision on the upcoming hearing was adopted at a Constitutional Court penal meeting on June 24, the court's press service said in a statement.

"The inquiry will be considered on its merits with participation by the parties at the meeting of the Plenum of the Constitutional Court scheduled for 10 a.m. on June 27," it said.

Azerbaijan's Milli Majilis held a plenary meeting on June 21 to adopt an address to the country's president requesting him to order new parliamentary elections. The request was backed by 105 MPs, while one voted against.

The ruling New Azerbaijan party was the request's initiator.

Azerbaijan is due to hold the next parliamentary elections in early November 2024. However, Baku will host the COP29 climate conference that month. "We believe it would be reasonable to dissolve the parliament and announce early parliamentary elections under these circumstances," ruling party deputy chair Tair Budagov said earlier.
