Former head of Sergokala district in Russia's Dagestan detained on petty hooliganism counts

MAKHACHKALA. June 25 (Interfax) - Former head of the Sergokala district in Russia's internal republic of Dagestan Magomed Omarov has been detained on counts of petty hooliganism, the Dagestani police told Interfax.

"He has been charged with an administrative offense on counts of petty hooliganism. Materials are being prepared to open a case on counts of aiding and abetting terrorism. This is preliminary information," a police representative said.

One of Omarov's sons was among the Derbent and Makhachkala assailants, the representative said.

Omarov was detained after the terror attacks in Makhachkala and Derbent on June 23.

Head of Dagestan Sergei Melikov said on Monday that Omarov had been relieved of his duties as the Sergokala district administration head.

Armed militants attacked a synagogue and a church in Derbent and a church and a traffic police post near a synagogue in Makhachkala on June 23. Twenty-one people, including 15 police officers and a National Guard member, were killed, and more than 20 people were injured in the incident. Five militants were killed and are being identified. According to Melikov, natives of the Sergokala district perpetrated the attacks.
