Kremlin declines to comment on Gershkovich trial

MOSCOW. June 26 (Interfax) - The case of U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich is not as high-profile in Russia as it is in the United States, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"As for the beginning of the trial, you understand we cannot comment on that. We are aware that the case has been rather high-profile in the United States, but it is not equally high-profile in our country. The investigative process and the trial are in progress, so we should simply wait for a verdict," Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.

Journalists also asked about whether any progress has been made in the possible exchange of Gershkovich.

"The same as before, we cannot speak of any signs. We can only repeat that the issue really likes silence," Peskov said.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Sverdlovsk Region Court held the first hearing on the merits of the espionage case against Gershkovich, a reporter of the Wall Street Journal's Moscow bureau.
