Suspected Derbent assailant arrested in Russia's Dagestan

MAKHACHKALA. June 28 (Interfax) - The Sovetsky District Court in Makhachkala in Russia's inner republic of Dagestan has arrested a suspected participant in the Derbent terror attack, Dagestani Supreme Court Chairperson Zarema Mamayeva said.

"Having examined the provided materials, the district court placed the defendant under arrest for one month and 28 days, until August 23, 2024," Mamayeva told reporters.

Investigators believe that the arrestee was a member of the network of killed terrorist Osman Omarov, she said.

On June 23, armed militants attacked a synagogue and a church in Derbent, as well as a church and a traffic police station near a synagogue in Makhachkala. The attacks left 21 people dead, including 15 police officers and a Russian Guard officer, while over 20 were injured. Five militants were killed and identified. Head of Dagestan Sergei Melikov said that residents of the Sergokala district committed the attack. Later, Sergokala district head Magomed Omarov was arrested for 10 days. According to preliminary data, one of the militants was his son.

Criminal case on charges of a terrorist attack, illegal acquisition, storage and transportation of firearms and theft of firearms was opened.

Dagestan was in mourning on June 24-26.
