MINSK. July 2 (Interfax) - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has announced the release of inmates with oncological conditions among those people who were convicted after the public disorders that took place in Belarus in 2020.
"Don't be surprised if within a few days, our people who are seriously sick now, who did not escape at the time and are now in prison, who were breaking the country into pieces in 2020, will be released. They are actually severely ill, having in most cases oncological conditions," Lukashenko said, speaking at a commemorative event dedicated to Belarus' Independence Day.
The opposition claimed the voting results in the Belarusian presidential election of August 9, 2020 were falsified. According to the Belarusian Central Elections Commission, Lukashenko won the election with 80.1% of the vote. Belarus saw mass protest rallies and demonstrations during almost six months after the election.
