Number of Russians willing to live permanently abroad halved since 2022 - poll

MOSCOW. July 4 (Interfax) - Five percent of Russian citizens would like to move permanently to a foreign country for permanent residence compared to 10% of respondents who expressed this wish in March 2022, the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) said on its website on Wednesday.

The overwhelming majority of respondents (93%) said they had no wish to move abroad for permanent residence compared to 88% two years ago, the pollster said.

The remaining 2% of respondents could not answer the question, the poll findings show.

Nearly half of those polled (45%) admitted that they could move to a foreign country for permanent residence but do not know exactly when, one in eight respondents (12%) would like to move abroad within the next two years, and one in six respondents (17%) would like to do so over the next three-five years. Five percent of those polled said they might consider moving abroad in ten years or later, and one in five respondents (21%) could not say when it could happen.

VCIOM polled 1,600 respondents aged 18 or older by phone on June 15 nationwide.
