Georgian FM to attend NATO summit in Washington

TBILISI. July 8 (Interfax) - Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili has departed for the United States to attend the NATO summit in Washington, the Georgian Foreign Ministry's press service said on Monday.

Darchiashvili will attend a meeting between the foreign ministers in the NATO partner states format at the summit on July 10.

Relations between Georgia and NATO, the European Union and the United States began to decline over the past few months due to the adoption by the Georgian parliament of the law On the Transparency of Foreign Influence. Georgia's foreign partners believe the law harms the country's democratic development and contradicts western values.

Representatives of the Georgian authorities said the law was adopted solely for reasons of Georgia's national security.

Several days ago, the United States announced that it was postponing the Noble Partner 2024 exercise in Georgia indefinitely.

Kakha Kaladze, general secretary of the ruling party Georgian Dream, earlier told reporters Georgia was ready to continue cooperation with the U.S. and the European countries in all areas, including in the military sphere.

The NATO summit in Washington will be held on July 9-11.
