MOSCOW. July 12 (Interfax) - Turkey's admission to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is hindered by contradictions between its obligations as a NATO member and the SCO's founding documents, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"Indeed, we are aware of Turkey's intention to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. There are certain contradictions caused by the obligations and fundamental positions of Turkey as a member of NATO, the North Atlantic Alliance and the viewpoint enshrined in the SCO founding documents," Peskov told reporters on Friday.
"There are certain issues to be discussed, but of course, you know that the SCO's enlargement - many countries are interested in the SCO - is an item on the agenda," he said.
There is no precise timeframe for Turkey's admission to the SCO, Peskov said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan previously said that Turkey wished to join the SCO.
