Russian Pacific Fleet missile units practice on Kuril island

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. Aug 1 (Interfax) - A Bastion coastal missile system of the forces stationed in northeastern Russia have held a tactical drill on the Kuril Island of Matua, the Russian Pacific Fleet's press service said on Thursday.

"The missile battery's combat vehicles deployed across the island by several routes, crossing a beach on a volcano's foothills and creeks. The vehicles were camouflaged on main and reserve positions upon arrival," the press service said.

Emphasis was put on choosing positions for fire from dominant positions "to use the system's potential for long-range detection and destruction of targets," it said.

The exercise involved over 50 troops and ten pieces of special hardware.
