Aliyev, Shoigu discuss Russian-Azerbaijani relations, regional processes

BAKU. Aug 6 (Interfax) - Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during a working trip to Baku on Tuesday.

Aliyev said at the meeting that Shoigu's visit to Azerbaijan was a good opportunity to discuss the bilateral agenda and some issues of mutual interest, the Azerbaijani presidential press service said.

Aliyev also highlighted the importance of contacts between Azerbaijan and Russia to discuss regional processes.

"The president stressed that bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Russia are developing successfully, which is manifested in contacts including at the top level, documents and roadmaps signed between the two countries, cooperation in the security, transport, energy, and humanitarian fields, and military-technical cooperation. Aliyev also pointed out that he has regularly discussed these matters with Russian President Vladimir Putin," it said.

The intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation is working actively, and its next session is scheduled in Baku in the near future, he said.

Aliyev described Azerbaijani-Russian relations as an example for neighboring countries to follow and an important security factor, including in the South Caucasus.

Shoigu mentioned the successful development of Azerbaijani-Russian relations as concerns regional security, military-technical cooperation, transport, and the economy.

The agenda for bilateral cooperation includes some crucial issues which are handled successfully, including in particular the development of the North-South transport corridor, he said.

Russia supports the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, he said.

"The meeting also addressed prospects for the 3+3 regional cooperation format," it said.
